Merlin S5 | Filming in Wales [news]
13th-Mar-2012 09:59 pm
xTeenWolf Tyler ❤
nicci_mac was lucky enough to spend the day in close proximity to some S5 filming on location in Wales. Apparently Bradley and Colin were there.

WARNING: probably slight location spoiler

@niccilocked @ACthe2ndAC Up on the lip of the quarry so that we got a brilliant view of the action. Will be back tomorrow lunchtime to see the horses!
@niccilocked BEST DAY EVER! spent several hours watching Bradley and Colin filming a couple of scenes. Amazing.
@niccilocked Today I will be mostly hanging about in a quarry watching men in fur and leather beat the crap out of each other #OffToSeeTheWizard

nicci-mac: Several hours spent watching a scene being filmed and it was totally awesome. Going back tomorrow for more of the same. However - not allowed to share any pictures as they are desperate not to have any spoilers leaked. :-(
Guess I’ll have to hold on to them until the episode actually airs.

nicci-mac: Have arrived safe and sound in Wales. My cameraphone sucks big time, so any photos of the filming will have to wait until I can download my actual camera. I have been told who and what will be filmed today and am excited to report that Colin and Bradley are both in the scene. WOOHOO

Wow they are really locking down the picture taking etc. Something tells me they were not happy with last year's almost steady twitter and picture leaks from all the fans.

let's just hope all the spoiler freakage is because finally reveal
*naive*

oh gods it's happening

I wonder if the crackdown on pictures is due to a reveal of some kind???

I don't think they're going to get their wish tbh. If the public can see filming then some things will inevitably leak.

Perhaps though this is why less France filming this year (along with budget streamlining).

Budget streamlining, for Merlin? Are we sure about that?

All of the BBC is under pressure to keep the budget down because of the licence fee freeze essentially being a pay cut. They're going to be more accountable than ever for what they spend and doing it as economically as possible. That's why I'm not really surprised to see less France filming - it's got to be expensive to take everyone out there and if they can do it in two blocks instead of three...

I'm not sure about it. In a year when the BBC really had to do some serious budget streamlining, Merlin has become an HD show, it had a full series, and it was upgraded to the most expensive format, 35mm film which is used again for series 5.
Let's not forget, that Merlin is co-financed by it's international distributor, Fremantle Media which is a very successful company, and Merlin is one of their most successful shows. According to Variety, Fremantle's profit was $188 million in 2011.

Cool, though i want to know about the mysterious guest star ;)

Do you mean Stephen McCole and what role he plays?
14th-Mar-2012 10:28 am (UTC)
Yes. He'll most likely to be one of the bad guy of the week. but still, curious.

All this secrecy-thing is very intriguing. why would they do that? they really cautious about the whole not-to-be-seen-by-public thing. hmm...
14th-Mar-2012 10:34 am (UTC)
I'm curious whether he's just a baddie of the week or will stay for longer (and maybe play a nice guy).

I can only guess that they're not overly happy with a few things that leaked last year and although it'll be more difficult to keep things under wrap in Pierrefonds they'll try it everywhere else (where they have better control about who's getting access to filming locations).

I live in Wales - whereabouts is filming?
14th-Mar-2012 01:33 pm (UTC)
I'm sorry but apart from 'in a quarry' I don't know any details about the exact location.
18th-Mar-2012 09:54 pm (UTC)
It might have been Trefil quarry, near Merthyr Tydfil. http://merlinlocations.livejournal.com/tag/loc%3A%20trefil%20quarry But I'm not absolutely sure, just that they used it before.
